How the Wi-Fi code works
The code contains a short text in the WIFI:T:WPA;S:network;P:password;; format that iOS (since iOS 11) and Android camera apps understand. Special characters like ; and : in your network name or password are escaped automatically.
Because the password is inside the code, the code is effectively the password. Print it for a guest network, and make a new code if you change the password.
Where to put it
- A framed card at reception, on café tables or in a holiday rental welcome book.
- At least 2.5 cm (1 inch) wide for scanning from arm's length.
- Add the network name in plain text underneath for laptops that can't scan.
Questions
Does a WiFi QR code work on iPhone?
Yes. The built-in Camera app on iOS 11 and later, and the camera or Google Lens on Android 10 and later, recognise Wi-Fi codes and offer to join the network.
Is my Wi-Fi password sent anywhere?
No. The code is built in your browser. The password never leaves your device, and we store nothing.
What if I change my Wi-Fi password?
The old code stops working, because the password is written into it. Generate a new one; it takes seconds.
