What the number tells you
A 12- or 13-digit result is a GTIN. The first digits are the GS1 prefix of the office that issued the company number (not the country of manufacture), then the company prefix, then the item reference, then a check digit. Paste it into the check digit calculator to validate it, or learn more in GS1 barcodes explained.

Questions
Which barcodes can it read?
EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Codabar, ITF, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec and QR codes. Exact support with the native detector depends on your browser; the ZXing fallback covers them all.
Can it look up the product?
No. A retail barcode holds only a number (the GTIN), not the product name or price. That information lives in the retailer’s database. You can check who a GTIN belongs to with GS1’s free Verified by GS1 lookup.
Does it work on desktop?
Yes, with a webcam, or by uploading a photo. Webcams often struggle with small 1D barcodes because they cannot focus close; a phone camera works better.
