SVG stays sharp at any size and is best for print. Keep the white margin either side of 1D barcodes (the quiet zone, at least 10× the narrowest bar); cropping it is the most common reason a printed barcode will not scan.
UPC-A vs UPC-E
UPC-A is the 12-digit barcode on nearly every product sold in the US and Canada. UPC-E squeezes certain UPC-A numbers (those with runs of zeros) into 8 digits for small packs. Switch type in the menu; the generator checks the digits for either.
Nominal UPC-A size is 37.29 × 25.9 mm at 100% magnification; GS1 permits 80% to 200%. Don't shrink the height below that or cut off the white margins.
Getting a real UPC number
A barcode image is only half the job. For retail, the number must come from GS1: you license a company prefix from your national GS1 office and assign product numbers from it. The generator will happily draw any valid number, but supermarkets and marketplaces check the prefix against GS1's registry. See GS1 barcodes explained.
Questions
Can I make up a UPC number?
It will scan, but it is not yours. Retailers and Amazon verify UPCs against the GS1 registry and reject numbers not licensed to your company.
How is the UPC check digit calculated?
Multiply the digits in odd positions (1st, 3rd…) by 3 and the even ones by 1, add them, and the check digit is what brings the total up to the next multiple of 10. Try it step by step in the check digit calculator.
