SVG stays sharp at any size and is best for print. Keep the white margin either side of 1D barcodes (the quiet zone, at least 10× the narrowest bar); cropping it is the most common reason a printed barcode will not scan.
Data Matrix vs QR code
Both are 2D and both use Reed–Solomon error correction. Data Matrix (ECC 200) is more compact for short strings and is the industrial choice: laser-etched onto circuit boards and car parts, and used as GS1 DataMatrix on medicine packs. QR codes are better for consumers because every phone camera opens them. If people should scan it, make a QR code.

Can a phone read Data Matrix?
Many can via scanner apps and our in-browser scanner, but the default camera app on some phones only reacts to QR codes.
